Google Analytics report building guide

Centralize your analytics data from all of your accounts with the Google Analytics data source. Take a look at how your analytics have changed over time, and use the data to take your business to the direction it needs to go.

For a full list of fields available for the Google Analytics data source connector, take a look at our Google Analytics metrics and dimensions documentation.

Once you’ve connected to Google Analytics, you’re ready to create your first query in Google Sheets, Looker Studio (formerly Data Studio), or Excel.

Try these queries

See the following use cases for examples of how to set up queries.

See number of sessions

Use the "Sessions" metric to see the total number of sessions in the given time frame. In this example, we use the last 28 days.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the time series chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Last 28 days.
  2. Select the Sessions metric.
  3. Select the Date dimension to split the query results by date.

See transactions and transaction revenue

Fetch data on your transactions and transaction revenue for the year until today, and split the results by month.

The "Transactions" metric shows the total number of transactions.

The "Transaction revenue" metric shows the total sale revenue (excluding shipping and tax) of the transaction.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the time series chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Year to date.
  2. Select the Transaction and Transaction revenue metrics.
  3. Select the Month dimension to split the query results by month.

See users and pageviews

Check the number of visitors and pageviews for your website for the past week, and split the results by page.

The "Users" metric shows the total number of users.

The "Pageviews" metric shows the total number of pageviews for the property.

The "Unique pageviews" metric shows the number of sessions during which the specified page was viewed at least once. A unique pageview is counted for each page URL + page title combination.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Last week.
  2. Select the Users, Pageviews and Unique pageviews metrics.
  3. Select the Page title and Page path dimensions to split the query results by page title and page path.

See total events and unique events

View the total number of events on your website, and compare them to unique events. Here we fetch this data for the past year and split it by week.

The "Total events" metric shows the number of events for the profile across all categories.

The "Unique events" metric shows the number of unique events. Events in different sessions are counted as separate events.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the time series chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Year to date
  2. Select the Total events and Unique events metrics.
  3. Select the Year & week dimension to split the query results by week. Note that if you use the Week dimension, and the first days of the year were included in Week 52 of the previous year, your results will also show Week 52.

Set up scheduled refreshes for your reports

You can set up scheduled refreshes for your reports created in Google Sheets and Excel. Follow the instructions on how to create and manage scheduled reports in Google Sheets and how to set up scheduled report triggers in Excel.

In Looker Studio, you can have a copy of your report emailed to you and important stakeholders at regular intervals.
